ALTON, Ill. — Workers are taking major steps to address a massive sinkhole that appeared more than a year ago at Gordon F. Moore Community Park in Alton.
The sinkhole formed in June 2024 on the park’s football field. The investigation began Monday, and FOX 2 captured new video of the work Wednesday.
Crews are working to pump thousands of gallons of water from the hole into nearby drainage ditches. Engineers plan to sample the floor and interior of the cargo hold to measure humidity, pressure and ground strength.

Once the water is fully pumped out and crews determine conditions below the surface, officials can determine next steps to restore the field, including potential permanent solutions.
