He gave rare insight into the team’s process for evaluating players and making personnel decisions. Most of the discussion you’ll find on the internet so far revolves around his mention of Kenneth Walker III, but there are many more interesting quotes about team-building strategies that describe the “why” behind their recent success.
He mentioned Walker once, saying he’d love to have him back, Zach Charbonnet once, praising his work ethic, and Sam Darnold, saying he was a better option than any college quarterback last offseason. But perhaps the most interesting thing Schneider mentioned was a name he mentioned twice during the press conference — which wasn’t a player at all, but was probably the most important person he worked with at the combine every year.
The name is Aaron Hineline, the Seahawks’ director of college scouting. There is less information about the scouts than any member of the coaching staff, but they play as important a role as anyone in shaping the roster. A graduate of Woodinville High School and Central Washington University, he has been with the Seahawks for 20 years, working his way up from intern to assistant director of college scouting and to his current position in 2023.
While coaches have been trying to win games all season long, Heinlein has led Seattle’s mission to find more than 1,000 eligible players for the 2026 NFL Draft, managed regional scouting and gathered intelligence at a pace fans could never have imagined. While relatively little is known about him, he deserves just as much credit as the gems the Seahawks found in the draft, from Gray Zabel to Ty Okada and everyone in between. When thinking about this week’s NFL Combine, imagine Heinlein as Schneider’s right-hand man, watching 319 candidates test and interview and learn more than any member of the media could ever dream of knowing.
