Schaefer and Wiesblatt’s first NHL goals lead Predators over Flames 5-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Reid Schaefer and Ozzy Wiesblatt each scored their first NHL goals, Juuse Saros made 27 saves and the Nashville Predators beat the Calgary Flames 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Michael Bunting had a goal and an assist, Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault also scored and Nicolas Hague had two assists for the Predators, who have three wins in four games.

Morgan Frost scored and Devin Cooley and Dustin Wolf combined for 23 saves for Calgary, which finished a five-game road trip at 2-2-1.

Schaefer scored the first goal of the game at 6 minutes and 24 seconds into the game.

Schafer stopped just outside the crease, caught a loose puck and slid it past Cooley for his first goal, just his third NHL game.

Saros’ best stop was Jonathan Huberdeau’s breakaway with 3:45 left in the first. Huberdeau forced a neutral-zone turnover on Hague, then skated alone to Saros, who blocked Huberdeau’s backhand with his left pad.

At 5 minutes and 04 seconds of the second quarter, Stamkos rewritten the score to 2-0.

After receiving a pass from Ryan O’Reilly, Luke Evangelista carried the puck into the back of the Calgary net and found Stamkos on the doorstep. The goal was Stamkos’ 1,200th career point, becoming the 53rd player in NHL history to reach this mark.

Marchessault extended Nashville’s lead to 3-0 with 5:35 left in the second period, and Weisblatt followed 1:07 later, taking a pass from Bunting and scoring his first career NHL goal. Tuesday marked Calgary native Wiesblatt’s 28th NHL game.
