Safety concern prompts major recall of hundreds of thousands of popular SUVs

PLANO, Texas — A safety issue involving the seating system of a widely sold SUV has triggered a major recall that affects hundreds of thousands of vehicles in the United States.

Toyota announced Thursday that it will recall about 550,000 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles from the 2021 to 2024 model years due to a problem with the second-row seat assembly.

According to the automaker, the second-row seat’s recliner assembly may not fully lock after adjusting the seatback. If the seat back is not properly secured, it may not properly restrain the occupants, which may increase the risk of injury in a collision, especially at high speeds.

Toyota said it is currently preparing to resolve the issue. Once available, Toyota dealers will replace the return spring in the seat recliner assembly with an improved part at no cost to the owner.

The automaker said owners of affected vehicles can expect to receive notification of the recall in early May.

Drivers can check whether their vehicle is covered by the recall by entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information on Toyota’s recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall database.

Owners with questions can also contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center for assistance at 1-800-331-4331.
