Rutgers slips past Maryland 69-65 after 20-point lead disappears

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Tariq Francis scored 19 points and Rutgers led by 20 points in the first half to beat Maryland 69-65 on Sunday to sweep the season series.

In another game this season, Rutgers defeated Maryland 68-57 at home.

Maryland, which trailed by 19 points at halftime, fought back early in the second half. Elijah Sanders and Andre Mills hit 3-pointers, and the Terrapins hit five 3-pointers six minutes into the second half and went on a 13-0 run to make it 45-41.

Maryland led 48-47 and the game was tied at 54 with less than five minutes left. Rutgers quickly took a 60-54 lead and led the rest of the game. The Terrapins cut the deficit to two points twice in the final half-minute, but Rutgers hit shots from the free throw line both times to preserve the victory.

Darren Buchanan Jr. scored 14 points and Jamichael Davis scored 12 points for Rutgers (12-17, 5-13 Big Ten).

Mills had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Sanders had 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Maryland had a 50-26 rebound advantage, but Rutgers had 19 turnovers and six turnovers. Solomon Washington scored 15 points and 4 blocks, and David Coit scored 10 points for the Terps (11-18, 4-14).

Maryland made 1 of 14 three-pointers in the first half and committed 14 turnovers. Rutgers took a 14-0 advantage on points off turnovers to help the Scarlet Knights lead 39-20 at halftime. The Scarlet Knights outscored the Terrapins 18-4 in eight minutes.

The Scarlet Knights earned their second road win of the season.
