A “road rage” incident on a Virginia highway on Sunday reportedly escalated into a mass violence stabbing that left at least two people dead, authorities said.
The attack occurred on southbound Interstate 495 near the Annandale Creek Turnpike in Fairfax County, about 30 minutes outside of Washington, D.C.
One of the four stabbing victims and a dog died in the incident, authorities said. When police returned fire, the suspect was also killed.
Officials said the attack did not appear to be related to terrorism.

“At approximately 1:17 p.m., a Virginia State Trooper was called to the scene for a road rage incident,” Virginia State Police said.

“The stabbing occurred either before or concurrently with the police response,” authorities added in a statement to Fox News Digital.
According to reports, police were called and found a male suspect armed with a knife. During the confrontation, the officer reportedly shot the suspect in self-defense. Authorities added that the responding troopers were not injured.
State police identified the victim as a 39-year-old woman who died from her injuries. The dog involved was also stabbed and died.

The incident resulted in the highway being closed due to a heavy police presence.
“Due to a major incident, southbound Interstate 495 and the 495 Express Lanes via Gallows Road are closed,” the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Northern Virginia office said, adding that the lanes were “blocked due to police activity.”
