Researchers puzzled by discovery after ripping apart Tesla battery: ‘We were surprised’

Researchers studying electric vehicle technology made an unexpected discovery while tearing apart a Tesla car battery and another from BYD — an examination that provides insights into current technology and the possible impact on the next generation of electric vehicle batteries.

ZME Science details the battery research, which was published in Cell Reports Physical Science. The team compared Tesla batteries to BYD batteries because both companies are leading automakers in the electric vehicle space.

ZME Science detailed that Tesla’s 4680 battery appears to prioritize power and range, maintaining higher energy density in a more compact design. However, this makes the batteries more expensive to produce. Meanwhile, BYD batteries are manufactured at lower costs while prioritizing stability, safety, longevity and economy, according to news outlets.

While the differences stood out the most, the team found some similarities, including at least one unexpected aspect.

Jonas Gorsch, lead author of the study, said in a press release: “We were surprised to find that the anodes of both batteries did not contain silicon, especially Tesla’s battery, because silicon is widely considered in the study to be a key material for improving energy density.”

Each type of battery has its advantages and disadvantages. According to ZME Science, although the manufacturing cost of Tesla batteries is at a disadvantage, it is more suitable for high-performance and luxury cars. However, its design may result in more heat buildup, potentially causing more fast charging issues and shortening its lifespan.

BYD’s lithium iron phosphate batteries, on the other hand, are more resistant to thermal runaway, allegedly making them safer. Researchers say its features also make it more suitable for mass-market and affordable electric vehicle models.

The battery teardown is one of the first looks at the inner workings of batteries from two of the most popular electric car makers, news outlets reported.

“In-depth data and analysis on state-of-the-art batteries for automotive applications are very limited,” Gorsch said in the release.

“This paper provides insights into the design and characteristics of state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications,” the researchers wrote in the report. “Comparative analysis of the Tesla 4680 cylindrical battery and the BYD Blade prismatic battery highlights significant mechanical, electrical, and material differences that may impact future battery design iterations.”
