A former senior Republican official has reportedly predicted the exact moment the party might abandon President Donald Trump.
Politico politburo chief Jonathan Martin told MSNBC good morning joe At the time, he expected lawmakers to break away from Trump.
“Frankly, I talked to a former Republican senator,” Martin said. “[They] Two words were spoken to me: submission deadline. “
He added, “Why is the filing deadline important? Because the senators are talking about the filing deadline for next year’s primary. That is, when that becomes clear, when it passes, when these legislators know who is running against them in next year’s primary, then you’re going to see more freedom and even more independence.”
Martin’s comments on the show came amid discussions about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s alleged war crimes and Trump’s pardon of the former Honduran president who was convicted of drug trafficking.
These are just two examples of an almost non-stop storm of controversy since the MAGA leader took office for a second time in January.

The storm, in turn, has dropped Trump’s approval rating to 38%, leaving a growing number of Republican officials wondering how they went from a resounding presidential victory last year to facing a potential electoral carnage in next year’s midterm elections.
“I think this is another stone on the backs of members of Congress,” Martin said of upcoming congressional hearings investigating whether Hegseth committed crimes against humanity under international law.
“This mountain is Trump Mountain,” he continued. “This mountain has to endure this indignity every day.”
Martin believes Republicans may be more than willing to throw Trump to the wolves next year once they feel relatively safe from White House-backed primary challenges.
“These are people who care about their seats and their re-election,” Martin said. “If they find out there is no primary challenger by a certain date next year in 2026, they can start saying what they actually think [right-wing pundit] George Will called this administration a ‘moral ghetto’. “
