Report: Terry Smith Staying At Penn State On Matt Campbell’s Staff

Penn State and Matt Campbell reportedly reached an agreement earlier tonight that will see the former Iowa State head coach head to Happy Valley on an eight-year contract. If you ask any Penn State fan, Campbell’s top priority: Ask and/or plead for Terry Smith to stay at Penn State. Well, I’m not sure whether to “ask” or “beg,” but according to multiple reports (Audrey Snyder first), Terry isn’t going anywhere crazy.

Man, this is a Penn State legend. Seriously, how do we deserve this man? After spending the past 12 seasons as an assistant and eight weeks as interim coach, it would be completely understandable if he wanted to look elsewhere. However, Terry was already locked in. There is no need to look around. Not in Alabama. Not at Ohio State. and ccertainly Not at Virginia Tech. For Terry, it was Penn State or nowhere.

I don’t need to scroll through Terry’s resume as a coach and leader. You all know it. You know how important that is for short-term lineups, and maybe even more so for long-term lineups. Terry’s retention is more than just “hey, maybe he’ll help retain some of the existing players.” That’s certainly a positive, but the man is one of the best cornerbacks coaches in the sport, and as we’ve seen over the past two months, his impact on the program extends beyond his position group.

Welcome back, Terry, and thank you for your loyalty.
