The upcoming quarterback carousel may not include Mac Jones.
Every Competitora market has not appeared yet 49ers starter Lock Purdy’s backup.
This makes sense. With a slew of free-agent options currently available — and more to come as cuts are made — teams in need of a quarterback are more likely to consider players they can acquire without losing draft picks.

The 49ers wisely signed Jones to a two-year deal last year, giving them full control of his rights through 2026. They said they didn’t want to trade him, but that was certainly posturing. If the price is right, they will find another No. 2 player for next season.
Jones is expected to earn just $3.25 million in 2026. If someone were to trade him with the idea of making him a starter or a contender, he’d probably want a raise. This adds another problem to the situation.
For now, it makes sense for teams looking for a quarterback to look to the open market. Once the initial wave subsides, teams that have yet to satisfactorily address the issue may decide to compete for a 2021 first-round pick.
