With the MLB offseason well underway, the Boston Red Sox have been active but have yet to officially add a big-name player.

In addition to the deal for pitcher Sonny Gray, Boston has been involved in talks with nearly every major free agent and trade candidate as the club looks to build on its first playoff appearance since 2021.
But while the focus is on the big-name players, the Red Sox may be exploring a more subtle path to improvement. Boston has inquired about St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Wilson Contreras, according to report writer Chris Cotillo, a potential move that could stabilize the position while adding a veteran presence without requiring the kind of financial commitment that typically accompanies elite free agency.
Contreras offers power without a hefty price tag
Willson Contreras may be reviving his career with the Cardinals after moving from catcher to first base full-time last season. After an injury-plagued 2024 season, the three-time All-Star no longer needs to catch the ball and is prioritizing his health.

The shift paid off. Contreras played in 135 games, the second-highest total of his career, and set career highs in hits, RBIs and runs, helping the Cardinals to a solid mid-table finish while re-establishing his value in the league.
Contreras, who has two years left on his contract worth $41 million plus a club option for 2028, provides an affordable solution to the first base woes that plagued Boston last season. The Red Sox will have a hard time filling the position after Triston Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury and there was uncertainty before Rafael Devers ultimately left.
A former World Series champion, Contreras will also bring much-needed veteran leadership and postseason experience to a young Red Sox roster ready to compete in the American League East. His presence will stabilize the lineup while giving Boston a proven voice in the clubhouse.
