The Boston Red Sox have reportedly been trying to retain Alex Bregman throughout the offseason, but he remains unsigned.
Spring training is getting closer, and Bregman’s free agency is once again longer than expected. The Red Sox have publicly stated their admiration for Bregman and reportedly made an “aggressive” offer to him.

It’s January and time is running out for free agent signings. Sports Illustrated’s Will Rouse and Nick Selbe predict Bregman’s long free agency career will end with him re-signing with the Red Sox.
“Bregman is opting out of a three-year, $120 million contract just one year into his contract with Boston,” Sports Illustrated wrote on Wednesday. “A quadriceps injury mid-year cost him about a month and a half, but he’s coming off a relatively sluggish 2024.” He’s been productive at the plate after this season. Bregman’s approach is sound, with few swings and misses, good control of the strike zone, and his defense is still solid at least in the hot corners, so he’ll likely get a four- to five-year offer from the team this time around. Bregman was in a leadership role with the Red Sox, who look motivated to sign a star infielder.”
Bregman’s leadership skills may be why he’s so high on the Red Sox’ priority list. Young players on the team praised his leadership even when he was injured. On the court, he was selected to the All-Star Game for the third time in his career.
Before his injury, Bregman was on track to have a phenomenal season. Before the injury, he was hitting .299 with an OPS of .938. He still finished with a .273/360/.462 slash line and 18 home runs.
Before the injury, he was ninth in baseball. After the injury, he had an OPS of .250 and an OPS of .724. After a full offseason to heal, he may be ready to dominate again like he was before the injury.
