The Boston Red Sox have a brutal distinction:

They are the only MLB team that has yet to sign a free agent this offseason.

The news became official Wednesday night when the Colorado Rockies signed Michael Lorenzen and removed their name from the roster.

The Red Sox haven’t exactly gone quiet.

They traded starting pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman Wilson Contreras.

They are also believed to be actively involved in pursuing Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, with their free-agent body yet to reach a conclusion.

Still, that’s not the most encouraging part. The Red Sox may be the most competitive team in baseball, but other teams in the AL East are also making moves.

Boston needs to at least try to catch up and even more than point to Gray and Contreras as important additions.

The Red Sox market is too big to ignore the free agent pool.

If they happen to miss Bregman and Bichette, things could get very concerning. But at least if they get one of them, they’ll end up doing well this offseason.
