Preuss start in Hochfilzen left open after coronavirus confirmed

Reigning Women’s World Cup champion Franziska Preuss is in doubt for the Hochfelzen tournament starting on Friday after testing positive for coronavirus.

Teammate Selina Grotian also faces a battle to get fit for the Austrian event, having both fallen ill during last week’s season opener in Östersund, Sweden.

“The final decision will be made within the next day or two, as both athletes fell ill in Östersund and we are not yet 100 percent sure whether they will be fit to compete,” sporting director Felix Bitling said in a statement on Tuesday.

Preuss confirmed the news of her coronavirus infection on social media, as well as Grotian’s undisclosed ailment, which includes a sore throat, which will worry winter sports organizers ahead of February’s Games in Milan and Cortina.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, winter sports events have been significantly reduced due to virus cancellations before lockdowns halted the season.
