A Michigan teacher was sentenced Tuesday after she admitted to having sex with a 16-year-old student she tutored and recording the incident, court records show.
Fox2 Detroit report Jocelyn Sanroman, 27, was sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court to four to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Sanroman was arrested and arraigned in June 2025 on charges of sexual intercourse in 2023.
Sanroman was a teacher at Oakside Prep Academy, a charter school in Waterford Township, about 30 miles from downtown Detroit, when she had a sexual relationship with a student she was tutoring.

The judge presiding over the case said Sanroman recorded sexual contact with the teen at his home.

Sanroman told another teacher about the relationship, who contacted police, prompting an investigation.
San Roman’s attorney said his client’s mental health issues have not been resolved, Fox 2 reported.
“She made a huge error of judgment here. A lot of it had to do with her own mental health issues,” the defense lawyer said. “She has to take it upon herself. She understands that, and she’s trying to move forward and try to be a better person.”

The judge asked San Roman what she was thinking.
“Not my best idea,” she replied.
“This was serious risk-taking, taking advantage of a minor and videotaping it,” the judge said. “You had sex with the minor in his home, didn’t you? That was disgusting.”
During the proceedings, prosecutors read a victim impact statement from the boy’s mother, who said her son’s and his family’s lives had been changed forever.
“I watched my son’s name being publicly judged and criticized for situations involving minors and adults,” the letter reads. “I watched my son change. He became withdrawn and avoided people because of the fear and attention this situation created. I took him out of school and enrolled him in online education.

The judge presiding over the case said Sanroman recorded sexual contact with the teen at his home.
“His normal life, his education, his daily routine and his sense of security were all taken away,” she continued. “It makes me constantly fearful and anxious, not just for him but for other children as well.”
As part of his plea, Sanroman will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

At his trial last year, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said Sanroman “is accused of using his position to exploit minor victims.”
“As a former teacher, I applaud the teacher who contacted police about this matter to protect other students from further exploitation,” McDonald said.
McDonald noted that while 16-year-olds can legally give consent, that doesn’t apply in cases involving teachers.
“It’s because we need to make schools the safest places for kids, right? From gun violence, from assault, from sexual assault,” she said. “Schools should be places where children feel safe.”

School officials previously said they took immediate action upon learning of the allegations, stressing that student safety is their top priority.
Oakside Preparatory Academy is part of the National Heritage Academy system, which promotes a “morally focused” curriculum designed to teach students the difference between right and wrong, according to its website.
