Police, witnesses provide more information on deadly alleged road rage incident on I-84

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – Connecticut State Police detectives are continuing to investigate a fatal road rage incident that occurred Tuesday near Exit 44 on Interstate 84 East in West Hartford.

According to state police, a tractor-trailer driver was traveling in the right lane of the interstate before he stopped, got out, ran across the highway and jumped on the hood of a box truck.

One driver, who asked not to be named, told News 8: “I witnessed it in the rearview mirror. I saw the guy banging on the truck and someone spraying what looked like a fire extinguisher.”

The driver of the truck began driving away and ran over the driver of the tractor-trailer, seriously injuring him. State troopers made contact with the driver of the truck on Connecticut Avenue in East Hartford.

The driver of the truck has not been identified and is not in custody, said Trooper Remonda Zhuta of the Connecticut State Police.

“At this time, we have not detained that individual and we have not made an arrest,” Jutta said. “However, that doesn’t mean it won’t change in the future.”

Jutta said the investigation is still in its early stages and investigators are still interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence.

Christian Nieves, who works in the area, filmed the truck driver being handcuffed on his cellphone.

“One of my coworkers said, ‘Hey, what’s going on over there?’ We both looked and there was one police car, two police cars, and all of a sudden, we saw at least seven police cars showing up,” Nieves said.

Nieves said he was unaware the arrest was related to a fatal road rage incident across the Connecticut River.

“This is not something you deal with every day,” Nieves said. “It was more like a movie scene back then.”
