Police in a Massachusetts city are warning the public to lock their doors and windows after a series of burglaries involving victims who were in their homes at the time of the crimes.
Seven homes in Somerville have been broken into since Tuesday, February 3, according to the Somerville Police Department.
“These incidents occurred in close proximity,” the police department said in a statement Thursday night. “In five of the cases, residents were home at the time of the break-ins.”
Police noted that “some” of the incidents resulted in arrests and that more break-ins have since occurred.
Two other break-ins occurred without residents present.
“We urge all residents to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their homes and communities,” the department added.
Somerville Police shared the following safety tips:
-
Even if you are at home, always lock your doors and windows
-
Don’t make loud noises to people you don’t know in multifamily buildings
-
Leave the lights on when you leave to make your home look like someone is there
-
Consider installing motion sensor lighting or security cameras
-
Call 911 immediately to report any suspicious activity
Anyone with information or anything suspicious is asked to contact police.
All break-ins remain under investigation.
