Pima County sheriff believes Nancy Guthrie suspect could strike again

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said he believed Nancy Guthrie was targeted and that the suspect “absolutely” could strike again.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen on Jan. 31 at his home outside Tucson and was reported missing the next day. Authorities believe she was kidnapped, kidnapped or otherwise taken against her will.

Nanos told NBC News that investigators believe they know why Guthrie was targeted, but did not disclose details.

“We believe we know why he did it, we believe it was targeted, but we can’t, we can’t be 100 percent sure of that,” Nanos said in the interview. “So telling people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry. You’re not his target’ is foolish.” Don’t ever think that because this happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No, you have to keep your wits about you. “

Nanos told NBC News that he intentionally withheld their theory and other details in the case, citing the integrity of the investigation.
