From what it sounds like, the Phillies will do whatever it takes to get rid of the right-handed hitting outfielder.
However, since Castellanos is due $20 million next season and has been one of the more average players in baseball over the past few years, teams may find it difficult to justify giving him the money.
According to the latest news from The Athletic reporter Matt Gelb, the Phillies decided to wait for Castellanos’ market to form. They’re hoping a small-market team is willing to spend some money to trade him at the end of the offseason.
“Salary is always a factor, even as the Phillies’ payroll continues to climb every year. They’ve told other clubs they’d prefer to trade away from the major league roster, a position that would change the roster and financial issues they’re familiar with. They’d like to reallocate some of their salary commitments, but that wish may not come true…

“That’s why they’re being patient about dumping Nick Castellanos, who’s owed $20 million in 2026. They’re hoping a team will pay even a small portion of that salary; that’s probably a pipe dream. But the Phillies think it’s worth waiting on the market, especially with some smaller-revenue clubs expressing a renewed desire to spend in the offseason,” he wrote.
Castellanos has said multiple times that he is not happy with the situation in Philadelphia.
In the Phillies defense, he had negative bWAR in two of his four seasons with the team.
He’s coming off a campaign in which he only had an 88 OPS+.
