Mattingly will serve his 23rd consecutive season as a major league manager and coach, including the last three seasons coaching the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost to the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.

After the World Series, Mattingly resigned as Toronto’s bench coach under head coach John Schneider.

“Having known Don for many years and worked closely with him in New York, I know his knowledge of the game and character make him a great addition to our extensive coaching staff,” Thomson said in a statement.

Mattingly, 64, played 14 seasons in the major leagues as a first baseman from 1982-95, all with the Yankees. Before retiring, he was a six-time American League All-Star and was elected the American League Most Valuable Player in 1985.

Mattingly coached the Dodgers from 2011-15 and the Marlins from 2016-22. He was named the 2020 National League Coach of the Year after leading the Marlins to their first playoff appearance since 2003.

Mattingly succeeds Mike Calitri, who became the Phillies’ major league pitch coordinator.

Philadelphia won the NL East title for the second consecutive season and was eliminated by the Dodgers in the NL Division Series.
