Philip Rivers’ return to form is one of the most unlikely developments in the NFL in recent years, and the Colts quarterback had another stellar performance against the 49ers on Monday night.
After nearly leading the Colts to a victory in Seattle in Week 15, Rivers was 23-of-35 for 277 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on Monday in Indianapolis. After being intercepted on his final pass of the night, Dee Winters returned it for a touchdown to help the 49ers win 48-27.

The loss didn’t knock the Colts out of the playoff picture, but they were still struggling, and Rivers said it was hard to focus on how much fun he was bringing to the reality of the team’s situation.
“I don’t know how to express it because marvelous“, Rivers said, via Stephen Holder of ESPN.com. “It’s been awesome to prepare, to get ready, to go out and warm up, to do all those things with these guys again, it’s been awesome. “But, again, the name of the game is not having fun. It’s helping to find ways to lead your team to victory. But we weren’t enough.”
The Colts were already out of playoff contention before Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, and Rivers’ idea was a moonshot to try to reverse that trend. It didn’t work out, but Rivers wasn’t the reason, and the lasting memory of the Colts’ season will be a little brighter because Rivers agreed to give it a try.
