Pennsylvania Game Commission urges safety after hunter dies in ‘deer drive’

JUNIATA COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – The Pennsylvania Game Commission is encouraging hunters to keep up the good work after a 26-year-old man died during a deer hunt Tuesday.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was part of a hunting group with 23 others who used a tactic known as “deer driving.”

It is a legal hunting method in which a group of hunters known as “drivers” push prey from hiding places to armed hunters. Its purpose is to bring game to hunters, not for hunters to find their game.

“They’re very effective, especially on a day like today when there’s a lot of snow,” said Lt. Amy Nabozny of the race committee. “So, that’s when the deer are stuck in the bed. They’re not moving around.”

But Tuesday’s hunt went terribly wrong. After a buck jumped up and plowed through a line of drivers, someone opened fire, striking the man in the buttocks and killing him.

Deer gun season opened last Saturday. Nabozny urged hunters to follow safety procedures for the remainder of the season.

“You know, no deer deserves to be killed,” Nabozny said. “So, always identify your goals.”
