Former Wisconsin cornerbacks coach Hank Poteat is a target as Michigan State’s next defensive backs coach, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.
The Spartans are rebuilding their coaching staff after recently hiring longtime Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, who last coached in 2022, will be tasked with turning around a Michigan State program that hasn’t posted a winning record since 2021.

Poteet brings a wealth of experience to Sparta’s secondary. The longtime NFL cornerbacks coach has held the position for the past decade. He started at Kent State in 2015-16, then spent four seasons at Toledo, two at Wisconsin and the final three seasons at Iowa State. Poteet was part of the 2021 Wisconsin defensive coaching staff that led the team to its best Final Four finish.
In 2026, Wisconsin will face Michigan State at Camp Randall Stadium. The Spartans’ early-season performance under a new coaching staff will be interesting to watch.
