As free agency approaches, so do trade rumors. While much of what was said never made it past the “rumor” stage, the information is worth noting.

In this case, it has to do with Chicago White Sox All-Star center fielder Luis Robert Jr. being linked to the San Diego Padres.

MLB insider Francis Romero said over the weekend that the San Diego Padres, New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates are all interested in trading Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr.

Romero also mentioned that “multiple industry sources believe there is a good chance that Roberto Jr. will be traded in the offseason.”

Chicago has lost more than 100 games for the third straight season, and Robert Downey Jr.’s momentum with the team has slowed significantly.

In 110 games in 2025, Roberto Jr. posted career lows in batting average (.223) and OPS (.661) while hitting just 14 homers and 53 RBIs. However, the 28-year-old had a career-high 33 stolen bases.

The San Diego Padres will likely move him out of center field, as 22-year-old phenom Jackson Merrill has the position locked down. Left field could definitely use an upgrade, with Jason Heyward listed as the starter at the position.

If the Padres are able to make a deal, they’ll be trading for a power/speed outfielder who may need a change of scenery to help revive his career.
