Padres add SP Walker Buehler on minor league deal

Buehler was a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015 and broke into the majors with the club in 2017. Buehler plays for the Dodgers through 2024 and leaves as a free agent. He spent the 2025 season with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.

Buehler has a career record of 57-29 with a 3.52 ERA. He accumulated 846 strikeouts in 839.2 innings pitched. Buehler finished the 2025 season with a 10-7 overall record, a 4.93 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 126.0 innings pitched.

The Padres have added multiple players since Saturday, with Griffin Canning, German Marquez and now Buehler all added to the rotation. The three new additions will compete throughout spring training with J.P. Sears, Kyle Hart, Matt Waldron, Marco Gonzalez and Triston McKenzie for one of the final rotation spots. Randy Vasquez has been projected as the No. 4 starter for much of the offseason, but as competition intensifies, he must earn that spot.
