Ornament smashed over man’s head in ‘vicious attack’

Two men suspected of a “vicious attack” who went to a man’s home and smashed an ornament over his head have been sentenced.

Merseyside Police said Michael Hobson, 50, and Jodie Murray, 42, knocked on the victim’s door in Bootle, Merseyside, on May 24 and attacked him once inside.

The man, aged in his 50s, suffered a fractured eye socket and cheekbone and said he had lost his memory as a result of the attack.

Hobson, of Hornby Road, Walton, admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to 15 months in prison and given a three-year restraining order by a judge at Liverpool Crown Court.

Co-accused Murray, of Fazakerley Street, Liverpool city centre, was handed a 12-month community order last month.

In an impact statement read to the court, the victim wrote: “I have been left physically and psychologically damaged.

“I had a fractured eye socket and doctors recommended surgery to realign the eye, but I won’t do it because I’m afraid of surgery and don’t want to leave a lasting scar.”

“Memory loss”

The court heard the man had lost his memory and could not remember what happened in June or July.

“Although I was physically injured, the attack had a greater psychological impact on me. It affected my sleep and I was unable to settle down in my own home,” he said.

“If I hear the slightest noise, I worry and see if anyone is there. I also take safety measures.”

Detective Constable Immi Mahmoud of Merseyside Police said: “This was a vicious attack which has had a considerable impact on the victim, who is continuing to recover from the incident.”

“I would like to commend the victim for the courage and dignity he displayed throughout this investigation, which was a very traumatic experience for him.”
