Oregon RB Makhi Hughes to enter transfer portal, per report

Oregon Ducks running back Makhi Hughes is expected to be one of the team’s most impactful offensive players before the 2025 season begins. But in the first half against the Montana State Bobcats in Week 1, he only made a handful of steals in a two-minute drill at the end of the first half when the Ducks built a 28-point lead.

It’s taken so long for one of the highest-ranked transfer portals to get up and running in 2025, which comes as a complete shock to almost everyone outside the program.

Hughes began his career with the Tulane Green Wave, emerging as a redshirt freshman with 1,378 total yards and seven touchdowns. His 2024 season was even better, with 15 touchdowns, 1,401 yards and two more receiving touchdowns.

But his numbers with the Ducks in 2025 were completely different, as he carried the ball just 17 times for 70 yards and caught two passes for 24 yards, giving up playing time to a loaded running back lineup of Noah Whittington, Jordan Davidson, Deir Hill Jr. and Jaden Lemar.

Now, Hughes has entered his name into the transfer portal after just one season with the Ducks, reports On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

On Oct. 1, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning announced Hughes’ decision to redshirt as his true freshman season at Tulane was classified as a medical redshirt.

Hughes has two years of eligibility remaining and this year’s game with the Ducks does not count toward his four years of eligibility.
