One Patriots play vs. Jets drew major parallels to Super Bowl LI play

The New England Patriots took control early against the New York Jets and they never looked back.

They even mimicked an old Super Bowl routine in the game when quarterback Drake Maye threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Stefon Diggs. In the Patriots’ comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels used the same play on the game-tying two-point conversion.

In that game, legendary quarterback Tom Brady teamed up with Danny Amendola to help the Patriots overcome a 28-3 deficit. This time, however, McDaniels made the same call and the Patriots led 28-3.

The Patriots were absolutely dominant from start to finish, storming into MetLife Stadium and defeating the Jets 42-10. Meyer’s touchdown pass was his third of the first half, and it wouldn’t be his last.

In the end, he completed 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The catch, which earned Diggs a $500,000 bonus, was his 80th of the season. So it’s clearly a win-win for all involved.

However, one has to wonder if McDaniels understood the history involved in the 28-3 scoreline before deciding whether to call the fight. Regardless, it was just one of many genius calls from the longtime offensive coordinator.
