One dead in Christmas Eve fire in Verona

VERONA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A structure fire in the Town of Verona on Christmas Eve claimed one life. Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol reported the fire call came in around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. A call came in reporting a structure fire at 5619 Main Street in Verona. When first responders arrived on scene, they found a building completely engulfed in flames. They were also told the building may still be occupied.

After the fire was extinguished and the building safely entered, one person was found deceased inside the building. The identity of the deceased will not be released until the identity is confirmed and next of kin notified.

The Verona Fire Department was assisted by more than a dozen neighboring fire companies, including the Utica Fire Company, which responded to mutual aid calls. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation with assistance from the Oneida County District Attorney.

Main Street in Durhamville remains closed to vehicular traffic.
