Washington state athletes earn medals
Western Washington University alumna Breezy Johnson won the women’s downhill gold medal with a time of 1 minute, 36.10 seconds to win Team USA’s first medal at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
A few days later, Johnson lost out on the podium to Jackie Wiles and her teammate Paula Moltzan, who shared a bronze medal in the alpine skiing women’s team mixed event. Although she hails from Portland, Ore., the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association calls Wiles “a complete product of the Pacific Northwest Ski Association.”
Johnson won in another way, though, with her boyfriend waiting to propose to her at the base of her super-G. She will return to the United States with a gold medal and a silver ring.

Seattle Torrents – PWHL
The U.S. women’s Olympic ice hockey team, consisting of four Seattle Torrent players, kicked off the 2026 Olympics with a 5-1 victory over the Czech Republic.
Torrent’s Hilary Knight has been named captain, and Torrent forward Alex Carpenter joins the leadership team as one of two alternate captains. Torrent forward Hannah Bilka and defender Kayla Barnes are also on the roster.

Knight tied the record for most career Olympic goals in U.S. women’s hockey history (14) during the first weekend of the Olympics. The five-time Olympian announced that the 2026 Winter Olympics would be her last, then broke the record for most Olympic goals in U.S. women’s history in her final game, a gold-medal win against Canada.

Heading into Monday’s semifinal against Sweden, the U.S. had kept a record-breaking 331 minutes and 23 seconds of shutouts in its previous four shutout games.
The previous women’s record was held by Canada in 2002, which went 199 minutes without conceding a goal.
In a fierce rivalry that lasted for years, the United States faced off against Canada in the finals. Hilary Knight tied the game with about two minutes left in regulation before Megan Keller scored the golden goal in overtime to give the U.S. the gold medal.
This year marks Team USA’s fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal appearance, having won gold at the 2018 Winter Games and silver medals in 2010, 2014 and 2022.

Torrent players back in Seattle gathered at local watch parties to cheer on their teammates and celebrate Team USA’s victory.
