Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
A brief video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaking at a church celebration surfaced online this week. The news quickly went viral, with millions of views and many comments that focused more on her appearance than what she said.
The 33-second video, which originally aired on C-SPAN on September 22, 2022, shows Rep. Ocasio-Cortez celebrating the 100th anniversary of First Baptist Church in Corona. In the video, she talks about the church’s long-standing food pantry program, employment programs for youth, pandemic relief efforts and services to Queens’ diverse immigrant community.
The video went viral when someone posted it on X with the caption “Jesus Christ.” It received over 3 million views. Many of the comments were crude jokes and memes about Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance. Some of the inappropriate jokes and quotes included photos of her and made political and socialist jokes.
Comments are divided. For example, one person said, “OMG we’re gonna lose the midterms.” A comment below said, “Call her whatever you want, but don’t be ugly.” A comment below said, “So beautiful, I’m Team AOC 2028.”
The viral video and comments distracted many from what Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was originally talking about. For example, she spoke of First Baptist Church of Corona and its role as a community anchor under the leadership of Pastor Patrick H. Young.
AOC’s Old Church clip went viral as the internet focused on her outfit rather than her words. Breaking news, entertainment, exclusive interviews and more.
