Ohio State nabs young SEC cornerback out of the transfer portal

While the pain and gnashing of teeth of seeing about 30 scholarship players jump into the transfer portal is enough to make Ohio State fans very anxious, we’re now starting to see players come to the banks of the Olentangy River on the back end. Remember, portals take and portals give.

At this point, the Buckeyes have been very aggressive in courting Columbus over the past few days to change their favorite colors to scarlet and gray, and that continued on Thursday. Not only did Ohio State acquire cornerback Cam Calhoun from Alabama, but it also received a subsequent SEC blow when Georgia cornerback Dominick Kelly announced a transfer to OSU. Lettermen Row (subscription required) first reported the news.

Kelly didn’t play much for the Bulldogs last season, but he’s a former four-star prospect with some upside. More importantly, this is a young player who should provide some depth and develop into Matt Patricia’s defense. He only had three tackles and three (unofficial) pass breakups last season, but with Bryce West and Aaron Scott Jr. gone, it will be important to have players competing for a spot in the rotation as Ohio State looks to rebuild the structure and depth of the defensive line next year.

The entire Buckeye Nation welcomes Kelly as a member of the Buckeye Brotherhood. He gives Ohio State his 15th transfer portal commitment as the university continues to reshape its roster in today’s exciting world of college football.
