TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — JT Toppin had a strong performance in overtime, scoring eight of his 31 points and No. 16 Texas Tech handed No. 1 Arizona its second straight loss, beating the Wildcats 78-75 on Saturday.
Texas Tech (19-6, 9-3 Big 12) defeated a No. 1 team for just the third time in school history. The Wildcats (23-2, 10-2) were 23-0 before losing 82-78 to No. 9 Kansas on Monday.

Arizona led 64-57 with 3:29 left in regulation, but Texas Tech responded with a 9-0 run, capped by Donovan Atwell’s corner 3-pointer to take a 66-64 lead with 25 seconds left. Arizona’s Ivan Kharchenkov hit two free throws to tie the game at 66, and Christian Anderson failed to hit a contested jumper as time expired.
After a short break, Toppin went to work, scoring four baskets on a series of tip-ins and post moves. The preseason All-American made 13 of 22 shots and grabbed 13 rebounds for his 47th career double-double. Anderson hit 6 three-pointers and scored 19 points.
Arizona’s Toby Awaka had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Brayden Burris also scored 16 points.
The Wildcats lost star freshman Koa Peat in the second half due to a lower-body injury. Pitt had two points and a rebound in the first half.

Arizona has lost backup guard Dwayne Aristote to an illness, meaning coach Tommy Lloyd is essentially down to a six-man rotation.
Arizona Tech led for much of the first half, but Toppin’s short jumper gave Texas Tech a 30-29 lead with 2:04 left before halftime. The game was tied at 32 at halftime.
