No. 13 Iowa tops No. 5 Michigan 62-44 behind Ava Heiden’s 24 points, moves into 2nd place in Big Ten

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Ava Hayden scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help No. 13 Iowa beat No. 5 Michigan 62-44 on Sunday.

Hannah Stuelke had 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Hawkeyes (22-5, 13-3 Big Ten), who helped the Wolverines (22-5, 13-3) post their lowest point total of the season and rank second in the Big Ten as Michigan enters the final week of the regular season.

Michigan ranks fifth in the nation in offensive scoring with 86.6 points per game, but shot just 30.5 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers.

Hayden shot 64.4 percent from the field, ranking fourth in the country, and he made 11 of 17 shots. Iowa held the lead for the final 28 minutes, responding to any run the Wolverines made by hitting shots.

Michigan pulled within 39-35 on Syla Swords’ 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the third quarter, but Iowa State’s Kylie Feuerbach made a 3-pointer before the final buzzer.

Then, in the fourth quarter, with the Wolverines within 46-40 with 6.5 minutes left, Iowa went on a 12-2 run, with Hayden scoring eight points.

The Hawkeyes shot 60.7% in the second half, including 71.4% in the fourth quarter, holding the Wolverines away. Michigan shot 31% in the first half and only made three field goals in the fourth quarter.

Olivia Olson scored 13 points for Michigan. Mira Holloway has 11.

Iowa led 27-20 at halftime thanks to Michigan’s shooting difficulties and turnovers. The Wolverines made just 9 of 30 shots in the first half, including 4 of 17 in the second quarter, with a score of 15-8. Michigan also committed 16 turnovers, including 11 in the first quarter, and Iowa turned those turnovers into 11 points.
