Nintendo Switch 2 Sets Record, Sells Over 3.5 Million Units in First Four Days of Launch

Nintendo Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units in just four days after its launch on June 5, making it the fastest-selling game system in Nintendo’s history. Despite being significantly more expensive than its predecessor and lacking Nintendo’s major games at launch, the Switch 2 still set a sales record for the company. The hybrid console comes with a larger screen and more features than the original Switch, as well as redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers and new social features.

Nintendo Switch 2 sets sales record

Nintendo confirmed the sales milestone in a post on Wednesday. Looking at Switch 2 sales, Sony’s PS5 reportedly sold over 3 million units in the first four weeks of its release. However, nearly nine years after the launch of the original Switch, demand for Nintendo’s next-generation console remains high. At midnight on launch day, eager fans lined up at retail stores in the U.S., Japan and elsewhere to buy a Nintendo Switch 2.

“Fans around the world have shown enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play games at home and on the go,” Doug Bowser, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, said in a statement. “We appreciate their response and are excited to see how much fun they have on Nintendo Switch 2 as they explore new features and games that bring friends and family together in new ways.”

Nintendo expects Switch 2 sales to reach 15 million units in fiscal 2026

During a May financial earnings call for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Nintendo said it expected to sell 15 million Switch 2 units in fiscal 2026 – a forecast that many industry analysts and investors considered too conservative given the demand for the device.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said in a reply to investors that Switch 2 sales forecasts aim to match Switch 1 sales in the first 10 months after the console was launched in March 2017. Furukawa also pointed to the higher price of the new consoles as a factor in the company’s conservative sales forecast.

“The price of Nintendo Switch 2 is relatively high compared to the Nintendo Switch, so we recognize that there are corresponding challenges with early adoption,” he said in response.

With the Switch 2 setting sales records, it seems like “early adoption” isn’t as big a deal as the company thought. The Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at $449.99 (approximately Rs. 38,600) and can also be bundled with Mario Kart World for $499.99 (approximately Rs. 42,900).

Nintendo’s new hybrid console features a larger display than its predecessor – a 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen that supports 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10 and variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. Switch 2 supports video output up to 4K resolution at 60 fps when connected to a compatible TV.

The Switch 2 also has more power than the original Switch. The custom Nvidia processor enables the console to run graphically demanding AAA games such as Cyberpunk 2, Split Fiction and Hogwarts Legacy. The redesigned Joy-Con now supports mouse functionality and connects to the device magnetically.
