New York Giants OC admits frustration over Jalin Hyatt’s gameday struggles

New York Giants offensive coordinator Tim Kelly offered a candid assessment of the ongoing challenges facing third-year wide receiver Jalin Kyatt during his Thursday press conference, highlighting the ongoing gap between performance in practice and Sunday’s performance.

When asked why Hyatt, despite clearly meeting expectations for winning goals in practice, failed to translate that success into games, Kelly had a blunt answer.

“Yes, I wish I had that answer,” he told reporters. “If I had given you that answer, I don’t think we would be having this conversation.”

Kelly had earlier described Hyatt’s difficult role as the fourth or fifth receiver as a background that requires versatility across positions.

“This role is a tough one for everyone in the league,” he said. “You have to be a know-it-all guy… Preparation in meetings, preparation throughout the exercise really helps build trust and confidence.”

Kelly acknowledged the recurring issues.

“Unfortunately, there were some communication issues and he was at the center of those issues,” he said.

Notably, those miscommunications led to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart’s interception late in the first half of the team’s Week 15 game, an error that originated with Hyatt rather than the young quarterback — a suggestion Kelly seemed to reinforce by repeatedly putting his receivers in such breakdowns.

Kelly, however, praised Hyatt’s efforts.

“Jalyn comes in every day and he works with Lars early on [Wilson]. He does a great job in meetings, trying to make sure we mitigate those issues and really trying to earn trust,” he said.

The admission highlights a frustrating season for the 2023 third-round pick, whose speed remains tantalizing but a limited role and execution errors have hampered his development in an injury-depleted receiving corps.
