The Boston25 weather team is tracking the chance of more than half a foot of snow falling in parts of Massachusetts on Friday, with the possibility of a larger ocean storm on Monday.
Friday will start dry, but unsettled winter weather is expected around midday. Boston 25 meteorologist Shiri Spear said in her latest forecast that a mix of rain and snow will develop in the afternoon, followed by snow accumulation that will peak in the evening.
Spear shared an updated snow potential map on X Thursday morning, showing an increase in expected snowfall totals.
The map predicts 4-8 inches of snowfall for locations north of the Massachusetts Turnpike, including southern New Hampshire. Between 2 and 4 inches of snow are expected south of the Pike River, including Boston.
Only 2 inches of snow is expected in parts of the South Shore, South Shore and Cape Cod. It doesn’t look like it will snow on the islands.
Scattered flurries may continue into Saturday morning, but overall, the weekend is looking sunny.
Our next storm opportunity will be Monday, but key details are still unclear.
“The track for the next storm has yet to be determined, making it irresponsible to discuss exact snowfall totals at this time,” Spear wrote in her latest weather blog.
A developing ocean storm could intensify as it moves northeast Sunday afternoon, bringing more snow to the area by early Monday morning.
“This is a track we favor because it’s far enough away to bring in the coldest air but close enough to really build up the wind and waves,” Spear said in his forecast.
As of Thursday, Spear said Global Forecast System models were expecting more than a foot of snow from the storm in the Boston area, while European models were showing “mostly misses,” focusing only on southeastern Massachusetts.
“There are still wide differences in forecast totals based on various computer models,” Spear wrote in a blog post. “Check back to be prepared when details come into focus.”
The Boston 25 Weather team will continue to monitor the weather forecast and provide updates as the week progresses.
