New Browns defensive coordinator Mike Ruttenberger knows how lucky he is to inherit Myles Garrett’s defense.
When asked what it means to him to come to Cleveland and coach the Defensive Player of the Year, Ruttenberg said coaching a player like Garrett is special.

“I guess I couldn’t be more excited,” Ruttenberger said of coaching Garrett. “I’m super excited. I can’t wait to see all of his superpowers, learn about his superpowers, and figure out what’s best for him to help him continue to achieve those superpowers.”
Rutenberg was hired after the departure of Jim Schwartz, who was popular in Cleveland and considered a strong candidate to be the Browns’ next head coach. Ruttenberger said what keeps the Browns defense playing at a high level has less to do with the schemes he will execute than the offensive mindset of his players.
“No matter what, it’s always about style over scheme,” Rutenberg said. “The way we play, how hard we play, fight for each other, how fast we play, how violent we play. And that always goes beyond plan. We chase the ball and then put our players in the best position to be successful, and that always starts from the front. That’s always been the case in the history of football. We’re going to continue to do that.”
With Garrett leading the defense, Rutenberg knows expectations will be high in his first season.
