New £13.9m clubhouse opens at Royal Dornoch

The new £13.9 million clubhouse at Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Sutherland is about to open to members.

These improvements are being built ahead of the course’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2027.

The new clubhouse is built from traditional sandstone and slate and houses a modern restaurant, bar and changing rooms.

It also displays many items to highlight the club’s rich golf history.

An official opening event will take place sometime next year.

Royal Dornoch managing director Neil Hampton said the club wanted to create an iconic space that told its story.

“You get some characters, some trophies, some great things that happened,” he said.

“Our old clubhouse was beautiful, quaint and a little cold at times.

“It’s a nice place, but not a great place to stay.

“It’s a bigger, better destination and worth spending more time in.”

Golf is thought to have been played on the links at Dornoch since 1616. King Edward VII granted the course royal status in 1906, and honorary members include eight-time Grand Slam champion Tom Watson.
