Can the Hollywood Smothers get Alabama’s running game on track in 2026?

The North Carolina State running back is transferring to the Crimson Tide, according to multiple reports. In 11 games in 2025, Smothers rushed 160 times for 939 yards and six touchdowns. He missed NC State’s bowl game before entering the transfer portal and averaged less than six yards per carry.

Smothers averaged six yards per carry during his career at NC State. As a redshirt freshman in 2024, he rushed just 89 times for 571 yards and six touchdowns. He also has 57 career catches for 453 yards and three touchdowns.

This is the second transfer of Smalls’ career. He played in four games as a freshman at Oklahoma in 2023.

Alabama’s Jam Miller is the team’s leading rusher in 2025 with 504 yards. Miller averaged less than 4 yards per carry, as did second-leading rusher Daniel Hill. He rushed 75 times for 284 yards and a team-leading six touchdowns.

Overall, Alabama rushed for just 1,562 yards on 456 carries. All season long, the Tide averaged just 3.5 yards rushing. Combined, Alabama ranks 123rd out of 134 teams in rushing yards per game.

With Smothers headed to Tuscaloosa, the Tide also received a commitment from five-star running back Ezzaville Crowell. The Alabama native is the No. 18 prospect and No. 2 running back in the state, as well as the state’s top prospect.
