Nationwide Cheese Recall Elevated to Highest Risk Category, Due to Listeria Contamination

If you love Pecorino Romano cheese, you should check your refrigerator immediately. The FDA just upgraded a nationwide recall of Pecorino Romano cheese to the highest risk level after it was discovered that grated cheese sold under several different brands was contaminated with dangerous listeria bacteria.

Between November 3 and 20, 2025, Ambriola Company’s grated Pecorino Romano cheese was sold under the brands Ambriola, Locatelli, Sam’s, Pinna and Boar’s Head. Here is information about the various products being recalled:

  • Locatelli Grated Romano Feta Cheese 4 oz and 8 oz cupsbatch number 1000572472, 1000570734, 1000570735, 1000570736, 1000572482, 1000572483, 1000572485

  • Locatelli Grated Roman Feta 5 lb. and 10 lb. bagsbatch number 1000570725, 1000572476, 1000570724, 1000572475, 1000570726, 1000570727, 1000572477

  • Pinna Grated Romano Feta Cheese 2/10, 10 lb plastic bagbatch number 1000572486

  • Boar’s Head Grated Romano Feta, 6 oz. Cupbatch number 1000572486

  • Sam’s Grated Romano Feta Cheese, 1.5 lb bagbatch number 1000570107, 1000570766, 1000572513

  • Boar’s Head Grated Romano Feta, 5 lb bagbatch number 1000570093, 1000570738

  • Ambriola Piccante Grated Romano Feta Cheese, 5 lb. and 10 lb. bagsbatch number 1000572981, 1000570737, 1000570092, 1000572487

  • Locatelli Grated Romano Cheese 48/8 oz Carrier, Plastic Cupbatch number 1000570750, 1000572499, 1000572514

The FDA currently has the highest recall level, which indicates “a reasonable likelihood of use or exposure, [the] product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” the agency said.

Listeria monocytogenes contamination can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. For children, the elderly and pregnant women, this can be particularly dangerous and lead to death.
