MSU hockey loses stunner vs. Ohio State in Big Ten Tournament

There will be no three-peat in the Big Ten Championship for Michigan State hockey.

The Spartans suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to a hot Ohio State team on Saturday night at Moon Ice Arena in East Lansing, Michigan. The Spartans have won the past two Big Ten tournaments and were on pace for a third straight title this year, but Ohio State prevailed in overtime to keep their dream of making the NCAA Tournament alive.

Michigan State got on the scoresheet less than two minutes into the game on a beautiful shot from Shane Vansaghi. The Spartans were busy for most of the first quarter, but Ohio State made it 1-1 on the first intermission with a game-tying goal.

Ohio State took its first lead of the night early in the second quarter on a power-play goal by Jake Karabela. The Buckeyes led nearly the entire game until Porter Martone scored on a one-timer. Martone’s power-play goal made the score 2-2 entering the third quarter.

Neither team scored in the third period, so we went into overtime. Less than three minutes into overtime, Felix Caron’s shot past Trey Augustine sealed the victory in overtime for the Buckeyes.

With the win, Ohio State will advance to next Saturday’s Big Ten Tournament championship game against Michigan. The Buckeyes have no at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and must win next weekend to continue their season with an automatic bid to the conference tournament.

Michigan State will now await the results of the NCAA Tournament lottery. With the loss to Ohio State, the Spartans appear to be a lock on the third seed and will be the top seed in their region. We will hold the official draw next Sunday.
