The Michigan State basketball team has been the best team in the country since the start of the new year, according to a prominent analytics ranking system.
As of Jan. 1, the Michigan State basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the nation in Torvik’s rankings. The Torvik system is one of the top analytical metric rankings used in college basketball, comparable to the KenPom rankings or the traditional RPI rankings.

Michigan State holds a 6-1 record in January, with their only loss coming by two points to undefeated Nebraska to start the new year. Since then, MSU has won six games by double digits, averaging just under 23 points per game.
Michigan State didn’t necessarily have a great January, but their blowout wins over USC and Indiana were noteworthy considering they were both competing for NCAA tournament berths. Things will get more difficult this week, too, as Rutgers has a tricky road game ahead of a massive top-10 matchup against rival Michigan on Friday.
In Torvik’s season-long rankings, MSU ranks No. 5 overall in the country. The Spartans are 18-2 overall and 8-1 in Big Ten play and once again look like a threat to run deep in March.
