PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Explosives mounted on a motorcycle exploded near a police station in northwest Pakistan on Monday, killing at least two people, including a child, and injuring several others, police and rescue officials said. The explosion also damaged nearby shops.
Local police official Fida Mohammad said the attack occurred in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.
He did not provide any further details, saying only that the dead and injured had been taken to nearby hospitals. Although no group immediately claimed responsibility, the suspect likely fell on the Pakistani Taliban (TTP).
Pakistan has seen a surge in violence in recent years, with the government often blaming the illegal TTP. The group is separate from the Afghan Taliban, which returned to power in 2021, but has close ties. The increase in attacks has strained relations between Islamabad and Kabul, with Pakistan accusing the TTP of operating freely within Afghanistan, a charge both the TTP and Kabul deny.
