MLB inks exclusive deal with prediction-market company before Opening Day

As Opening Day approaches, Major League Baseball is officially getting into the prediction markets business.

On Thursday, March 19, Baseball reached an exclusive agreement with Polymarket to become MLB’s official prediction market exchange. Under the agreement, Polymarket gains rights to use the MLB mark and logo as well as official data from Sportradar, a leading distributor of real-time sports data.

Prediction markets allow participants to trade contracts based on the outcomes of real-world events, such as elections, economic data, or sporting events. Polymarket already has contracts with the NHL, MLS and UFC.

Front office sports reporter Ben Honey broke the news of the MLB trade before the official announcement. A source told Horney the deal is for three years and is worth $300 million.

MLB sees the deal as an opportunity to provide input into the billions of dollars in rules governing baseball transactions this season. Baseball signed a memorandum of understanding with Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Michael Selig focusing on confidential information sharing. According to ESPN, the two sides will meet regularly to discuss potential threats to integrity posed by specific markets.

“Our new agreement with Polymarket and the CFTC is a necessary step to proactively manage the rapidly growing new prediction market space,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. “Protecting the integrity of the game on the field is our top priority. By engaging this community, we are able to work together to draw clear boundaries to mitigate risk while providing opportunities for fan engagement.”
