Mississippi State offensive lineman Jayvin James commits to transfer to Alabama

Jayvin James was in high school Blanche Ely In Pompano Beach, Florida. A three-star recruit in the 2023 class, he ranked No. 2,063 overall and the No. 149 offensive tackle in that recruiting cycle. Ultimately, he’ll choose Akron Bethune-Cookman and alabama.

In 2023, James played three games for the Zips. This allowed him to take advantage of his redshirt. It also set the stage for his breakout season in Akron in 2024, when he appeared in 12 games and made nine starts. That success will prompt him to enter the portal. Initially, he landed in Maryland in winter. However, he transferred again in the spring, landing in the SEC at Mississippi State.

2025 will be James’ only season with the Bulldogs. He started 12 games for Mississippi State and missed only the first game of the regular season. Nine of those starts came at left tackle. According to PFF statistics, James made a total of 856 steals, of which he was sacked only 3 times and made 6 free throws.

Mississippi State went 5-8 on the season and made a bowl despite missing six wins. The Bulldogs also went 1-7 in SEC play.

Now, James is set to join the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama was ranked ninth in the final AP poll of the season. That came after an 11-4 season in which the Crimson Tide competed for the SEC title and entered college football playoff. There, Alabama won one game before losing to eventual national champion Indiana.

Alabama has been very active in the transfer portal this cycle. That includes 23 players who have left the program. There were six different offensive linemen, including three offensive tackles. The Crimson Tide, meanwhile, has added five offensive linemen to replace those who are departing. Jevon James will join the program as the sixth forward.

There have been some changes to the transfer portal ahead of this offseason. The winter window moves from December to January and closes entry on January 16th. The spring window for players to transfer to new schools also no longer exists.
