Micron to break ground on $100bn megafab in New York

Micron Technology will officially break ground on January 16, 2026, to begin construction of a new US$100 billion semiconductor giant fab in Onondaga County, New York.

Once the project completes an environmental review and obtains required permits, ground preparation and construction work can begin.

Company leaders, including Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, will participate in the ceremony along with federal, state and local government officials and business representatives.

The Clay, N.Y., facility will be the largest semiconductor manufacturing plant in the United States and the most significant private investment ever made in New York state.

Micron plans to invest up to US$100 billion over more than 20 years to build up to four fabs, with an initial investment of US$20 billion and a target of completion by 2030.

The facility, designed with sustainability goals in mind, may include four clean rooms totaling 2.4 million square feet.

The development is part of Micron Technology’s strategy to increase its U.S.-made DRAM production to 40% of global production within a decade.

The company expects increasing production at the New York plant will help meet growing demand for memory components in artificial intelligence systems and other technology areas at the heart of current economic trends.

Micron Technology’s investment is supported by incentives at multiple government levels.

The company has received up to $6.4 billion in direct funding from the CHIPS Act for facilities in Idaho and New York and expansion in Virginia.
