Mick Schumacher found himself in the pits after colliding with Sting Ray Robb and Santino Ferrucci just two corners into his IndyCar debut in Sunday’s IndyCar season opener at St. Pete.
The contact between Santino Ferrucci and Robb ended with both cars being tucked into the tire bundles at the second corner. Schumacher was unable to react in time to avoid a crash and the race seemed to be over before it had really begun.
Robb continued racing after the collision, and both Ferrucci and Schumacher were eliminated.

Schumacher’s much-anticipated start comes after the former Haas F1 driver and Alpine World Endurance Challenge driver showed strong pace in pre-season testing. Schumacher announced at the end of last season that he would leave the WEC Alpine team before starting IndyCar testing on ovals and road courses, and announced that he would join IndyCar this offseason along with Rahal Letterman Lanigan.
Schumacher’s road to racing has been a checkered one, with the 2020 F2 champion struggling to solidify the success his family name expected. In Indy racing, the St. Petersburg Grand Prix never comes without warning, and it’s been known to eat up cars and drivers. Schumacher will get another chance next week as he competes in his first oval track race at the Desert Dual at Phoenix International Raceway.
