Michigan State’s pre-portal roster projection: Linebacker

The Michigan State football team is preparing for a roster overhaul, with new head coach Pat Fitzgerald needing to go through the transfer portal to assemble his first unit in East Lansing. The transfer portal opens on January 2 and will only last for two weeks, so a strong impact must be made immediately.

The first step in solidifying the roster is evaluating who will be retained on MSU’s roster while identifying holes in the starting lineup that need to be filled.

A look at the position groups on the Spartans’ roster distinguishes who the team may pursue when the door opens in the new year.

Now, looking at the Spartans’ linebacker room, there’s finally a room that feels good heading into the 2026 season. This may be the only position group that doesn’t need a starter.

Depth map projection:

  • World Bank: Brady Pretzlaff (RS Soph)

  • Backup: DeeJae White (RS FR), DiMari Malone (RS FR), Leonard Ah-You (RS FR), Adam Shaw (FR)

prospect: Now, between the three starters, you can go into 2026 with a lot of confidence. Now, will MSU look to upgrade and add another starting-caliber player to the mix? That scenario is very possible, and likely will be, but the linebacker room looks to be in a good spot right now.

The depth on the team looks good and there are some veteran leaders. Be prepared for any additions at the linebacker position, as the Spartans are a luxury addition.
