Former Michigan Wolverines head football coach Sherron Moore was taken into police custody on Wednesday, December 10, hours after the University of Michigan announced that he had been fired for allegedly having an “inappropriate relationship.”

“The Saline Police Department assisted in the search and detention of former University of Michigan football coach Sherron Moore,” the Saline, Michigan Police Department said in a statement to ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation of potential charges.”
PEOPLE has reached out to the Salt Lake Police Department and Moore for comment.
Michigan athletic director Ward Manuel announced that Moore, 39, was fired “with cause.” Manuel, 57, said a university investigation revealed “credible evidence” that Moore had “an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
“This behavior is a clear violation of university policy and the University of Michigan has zero tolerance for this type of behavior,” Manuel’s statement continued.

Manuel said associate coach Biff Poggi will serve as interim head coach “effective immediately.”

Moore joined Michigan in 2018 as tight ends coach and served as acting head coach during the 2023 season while Jim Harbaugh was suspended. In January 2024, Moore served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach when Michigan defeated the Washington Huskies in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship.

After Harbaugh left Michigan to return to the NFL and coach the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was named head coach.

In 2025, Michigan finished with a 9-3 record. According to ESPN, Moore was suspended for the third and fourth weeks of the season for participating in an illegal advanced scouting program. He also missed the 2026 season opener due to a one-game suspension.
The team was selected to compete in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on December 31st. They will face the University of Texas Longhorns.
